IPv4 only 4.3 billion address available. But 250 millions of them can be actually assigned for devices but thanks to NAT (Network Address Translation) and PAT (Port Address Translation), more devices can be added with some restrictions. But using IPv6, 3.8 x 1038 IPs can be achieved.
So many applications arise in recent. such as VoIP, VOD ( video on demand). Because of large scale of IP addresses, group of computers of IP based devices can communicate directly.
IPv6 has a much simpler packet header structure comparing with IPv4.
